Danza per Vida (2020) — in pre-production

Danza per la Vita is a 20th anniversary artistic commemoration of the tragic events that took place on 9/11, set to the Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi. It is a multi-media work that includes symphony orchestra, vocal chorale and soloists, dance, projection mapping, holograms, spoken text, adults, children, monks – and our audience. This live dance and music event will take place in at the nexus between New York City, Washington D.C. and Shanksville, PA, the sites of that day’s horrific tragedies. Several of the world’s leading choreographers will create original works to honor the many lives that were lost. The renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel will conduct a live orchestra and world-class designers will create a physical environment which will combine with augmented reality projection to connect the live and broadcast audience.

UVA Bicentennial (2017)

The Bicentennial Celebration of the founding of the University of Virginia by Thomas Jefferson (along with his fellow founding-fathers, James Madison and James Monroe) was an extraordinary evening of commemoration and celebration (even President Jefferson and Edgar Allan Poe made appearances!).

More than 20,000 people gathered to mark this historic event. That night, we noted both the highs and lows of UVA’s extraordinary history. Jefferson deeply believed that "an educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our survival as a free people." That was the essence of the commemoration.

The Bicentennial paid homage to many forms of artistic expression (48 separate performances!). There was a major architectural installation and augmented-reality projection mapping to share the past, present and future of America and the university. We presented a huge swath of performing arts and artists, including Leslie Odom, Jr. (Aaron Burr from “Hamilton”), Andra Day, the Goo Goo Dolls, the Martha Graham Dance Company, Katie Couric, Tina Fey, many a capella groups and choruses, the MLK Choir with the legendary Ingramettes, and many more. Rita Dove, the former Poet Laureate of the United States, recited a new poem for the commemoration. Importantly, we presented “Voices of the Descendants” as descendants of the enslaved who built UVA shared their ancestors’ stories. Jason George recited and evoked Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and “I Have a Dream.” We commissioned an oratorio entitled, “We Hold These Truths,” a new electronic music work, “Jefferson’s Clock” was presented (joined by a duet between a male dancer and a 200 pound moving sculpture), the Cavalier Marching Band marched, Virginia’s Governor spoke and so much more. It’s was an extraordinary and historic evening.
